Hens have free range of Sunnyside property

Correction: this article previously said they were roosters, which was incorrect.

A Sunnyside homeowner is keeping 3 hens in his backyard.

The owner appears to want to live off the fat of the land, since he also has a well-maintained vegetable patch.

(Follow up story to come)

  1. I’m all for keeping chickens, but roosters might be a disruptive to neighbors’ morning sleep.

  2. I’ve seen chickens running around Calvary Cemetery off Queens Blvd.

  3. If he kept hens, he could get fresh eggs!

  4. Maybe the roosters are the ones running off with people’s I-phones.

  5. I live in an apartment and I keep two chickens.

    (In my freezer).

  6. As a relative newcomer to Sunnyside, maybe a long-time Sunnyside Gardens resident can answer this for me:

How come so few people seem to take advantage of their back yards and the open communal areas in the center of many of the blocks?

Every once in awhile when passing through I see people in their own yards – but one would think the communal spaces were designed for activities like picnics or cook-outs or sun-bathing but maybe once in about 4 years have I seen them used as such. You’d think too that all those trails and trees would be a paradise for kids but I rarely see any playing in these areas (maybe they’re too busy playing video games inside?)

I appreciate people wanting their peace and quiet, but in away, if live poultry are making use of the space – well at least SOMETHING is.

  7. Whs the snitch who posted this?

  8. SONY W530, maybe owner know someone with this camera and can identify the snitch..

Health code? who cares? What are you gonna get? Avian Flu? load of crap, last time I wanted to buy a pair of chicks from a chick farm over in Jamaica (right behind building dept office) he said I couldn’t buy because of the avian flu.. I remember chinese was allowed to roam free when we had “asian flu” and then pigs were ok when we had the swine flu..
anyway, i wouldn’t mind a few cocks and chickens as long as they did not peck us to death.

  9. Some people might be concerned with chickens…..but one of my neighbors feeds a colony of at least 30 feral cats. She has built houses about 7ftx4ftx 4ft high in the front and back of her house. She feeds them a lot of food which she leaves out in trays. Flies come around and the smell isn’t great at all, and that’s not including the poop and pee that is all around the yard and neighbors yards since the cats just occupy their yards also. She also has at least 20 cats within her house, but that’s her business since there inside. I wish there was someone to inform of this problem, animals are fine, but in alot of cases it’s just out of control. This has been going on for at least 10 years. I hate to piss off a neighbor, but it appears she doesn’t care that her actions are pissing off others.

  10. D66 alot of the community gardens are not set up for our kids to play in like the one on 44th st near skilman ave on the south court that looks like a mess and our court assoc is a mess as well… we do have a part two blocks away and that is where are kids are to play.. it is our and we do pay dues and we should be able to have our kids play there I agree with you

  11. What about a rooster bookstore?

  12. So where is this rooster kept? What newspaper reports a story like this without giving specifics on the location? Oh, I know, the keeper of the rooster is Caucasian and we wouldn’t want to identify him or her.

  13. Um, that does not look like a rooster to me. Looks like a hen. NYC law is very clear that female chickens (hens) are allowed whereas male chickens (roosters) are not. Also, not for nothing, “several roosters” in a Sunnyside-size backyard would have killed one another by now. Hens are great pets!

  14. Two more things . . .

Sunnyside Post: Although this is not a photo of any of my pet chickens, I need to ask that you please check your facts to determine whether you are reporting on (legal) hens or (illegal) roosters here. Posting a photo of what appears — at least on this tiny screen — to be a perfectly legal lady hen and calling it a healthcode-violating rooster is not on par with your usual (excellent) level of reporting.

Owner of this chicken: Please post how on earth you are able to keep your vegetable patch “well-maintained” with pet chickens; my ladies seem to love nothing more than mussing up my garden.

  15. Hi Anna and readers,

The initial story was incorrect and I would like to apologize for that. Accuracy is vital to a site like this.
I have spoken to the owners of the hens and a good follow-up story is coming.

    Regards, Christian

  16. Christian, Thank you so much for prompt response and for continuing to provide our community with your amazing website. We really are lucky to have such a resource!

  17. Maybe some space can be set aside in the soon to be built $1.4 million dog emporium on 43rd Street & Skillman Ave. for people to exercise their hens.
