The story behind a Sunnyside tragedy

Rory and Ciaran Staunton from Sunnyside(source: Pat Dorfman)

Every Day Health  (excerpt)

When Rory (Staunton) fell and cut his elbow on Tuesday, March 27 while playing basketball at the Garden School in Queens, N.Y., it wasn’t particularly gruesome. So scant was the blood, his gym teacher covered it with a bandage and sent him on his way.

The next day, Wednesday, the cut reopened. This time, Rory was given two bandages. He seemed fine otherwise, so the teacher opted not to send him to the nurse. It was just a simple scrape.

If not try to copy and paste the above link.

  4. Absolutely heartbreaking.

  5. Simply dreadful. A common bacteria infecting a cut killed the poor boy.

My thoughts are with your family.

  6. Thanks for helping raise awareness on this little known infection. So many young people play sports in our neighborhood parks that should be aware of the symptoms and early detection. May the blessings of God give comfort to the Staunton family.

  7. Very sad. Prayers for the family.

  8. I met Ciaran through his fine Sunnyside establishment, Molly Blooms. His friendly outgoing nature made me become a regular at the pub shortly after moving here.
Ciaran sat briefly with my fiancé during brunch in mid-March and told us of his son’s reluctance to do homework. A typical 12-year-old. Two weeks later, Rory was gone. I still am in shock and disbelief and still cannot comprehend the loss of a child even after the very recent loss of my mother.
My friends and I frequent the pub often. It’s the least we can do to support such a great family who has been a great contributor to our Sunnyside community.

  9. Such a sad story… was hard to read all of that. Wish all the best to his family
