Greenpoint Ave. Disappointment
I had high hopes that the Greenpoint Avenue shopping district would one day be an upscale district. Most other parts of the neighborhood have seen improvement, Furthermore, Esparks (now Avenue Coffee House) moved in and anchored one of the corners of the block, while Bank of America is supposed to anchor the other. Furthermore, the florist is still there.
But then when I came back from my vacation, I found a thrift shop in the middle of the block. Not a sign of a thriving neighborhood. Perhaps I’m being a snob/jerk!

Why on earth would you want Greenpoint to be upscale? Are you interested in displacing a majority of the population in Sunnyside by increasing all of the rents? If you want upscale move to where that already exisits! I can understand wanting some better shops then the crappy ones that line the block, but if you want Sunnyside to become the next LIC with inflated prices and transplanted hipsters and financial people, no thank you!
Perhaps the word “upscale” was not a good choice.
I, too, don’t want the neighborhood to be bursting at the seems with GAP, Old Navy, Eddie Bauer, Lands End, etc. However, I did think the Thrift Shop was a disappointing.
I’m fine with the thrift shop. You can find other stores in the city, etc.
What’s wrong with thrift shops? I like them. And it’s a fairly well-done one so far. I like the flavor of Greenpoint as it is for the most part. There are lots of gentrified areas if that’s what you prefer, you know?
i love thrift stores.i don’t want an upscale shopping district. neighborhoods die by them.
the whole area is in shambles
@ Admin “GAP, Old Navy” upscale I think that just means chain not upscale. I agree with the writer of the post about how how lame the main strip is and how disappointing it is to see one junk shop after another and I don’t mean 99 cent stores or thrift stores it seems 9/10 of the stores on “The Avenue” are dingy and filled with crap. I think it’s also depressing to see all the stopped construction like the bank and that eyesore of a Key Food/ Food Dynasty.
I think the Sunnyside Shines people should get together with the Community Board and do something about Key Food / Food Dynasty on 46 Street. They store is filthy and an embarrassment to the neighborhood. Did you see the picture posted on Yelp that shows crud and a razor blade in the dairy case? See it here http://www.yelp.com/biz/food-dynasty-sunnyside Gross. Clean up or get out of the neighborhood you filthy store!
Not a fan of thrift stores local stores generally gives a character to the neighborhood. Better than Gap or Old Navy for sure. That Keyfood totally messes up the “business district”. It makes the area a dirty, smelly and dumpy — and their never-going-to happen empty lot is not helping either. So, only if those drive-thru(!?) fast food chains can go away…
