United Forties Civic Association
The United Forties Civic Association is a community group that advocates on behalf of Sunnyside and Woodside residents.
Don McCallian, an aide to Assemblywoman Cathy Nolan, is the president of the association. To get a flavor as to what the group does, the United Forties accomplished the following in 2010.
- Organized the political debates leading up to the 2010 New York state and Congressional elections
- Discussed monthly crime figures with members of Police Precinct 108.
- Supported the local food pantries and adopted a toys-for-children program
- Recruited Councilman Jimmy Van Bramer, Assembly woman Cathy Nolan and Community Board 2 chairman Joe Conley to speak to the group and field questions.
- Supported the movement for a plaque to be placed at the Celtic Park co-op that celebrated an Irish American Athletic club that existed on that site about 100 years ago.
- Recruited members of City Planning to discuss zoning proposals in Sunnyside and Woodside
The group meets monthly at St. Teresa’s church. It has about 50 members.

To Whom It May Concern:
I am writing to inform you that on 4/25/11, I had written to Queens Borough Deputy Commissioner, Maura McCarthy of the NYC Department of Transportation concerning designating “handicapped parking signs & spaces” to be placed at the SW corner of 50th Avenue & 45 Street. This is near the side entrance of St. Teresa’s Church, with the handicapped accessible ramp.
This would enhance the safety of disabled people in the community and I am requesting your support of this endeavour.
St. Teresa’s Parish, I believe , is also required to designate at least 2 handicapped parking spaces in it’s church yard, in order to comply with the “American With Disabilities Act.” Hopefully, the parish will finally address this deficiency soon and accommodate those with disabilities who attend church services.
Your Organization may wish to contact the DOT and the local Community Board, as well as the pastor to advocate for this project.
Your immediate attention to this matter is appreciated. Kindly keep me informed of your actions regarding these matters and the progress made to achieve & enhance safety for the disabled and all others concerned.
Your assistance in these safety concerns is appreciated.
Cordially yours,
John F. Doherty @ 67-01 Eliot Avenue, Middle Village NY 11379, 718-779-1751
